Development and innovation – everything for the bus system of the future

Smart building with KNX technology

KNX – a future-proof system

KNX is a standardised, wired bus system for building automation Via the central software, which is called ETS, it is possible to control various areas of the building, link them together and adjust them to each other. This includes, for example, controlling lighting, roller shutters, heating, ventilation, air conditioning systems and many other applications.

KNX is an open standard: over 500 manufacturers around the world produce KNX products, which makes KNX a future-proof investment. All products must be certified by the KNX Association – the KNX logo guarantees the connectivity and interoperability of all products.

KNX: building automation is green

Future-proof and resource-conserving

In addition to security and convenience, energy efficiency is one of the biggest advantages of a KNX system. This is because the automatic control of the building allows for energy-saving operation: If nobody is in the room, the light switches off automatically. If the window is opened, the heating deactivates automatically.

If the sun is shining, the sunshade is only lowered once the room has reached the comfort temperature. All of this and many other functions ensure that your smart home only uses as much energy as it really needs. This saves resources and is also just as good for your wallet.

Since 2009

MDT KNX innovations

The founding idea behind the MDT KNX range emerged on a private building site: “A KNX actuator like this must be able to do more!”. This was followed by laborious development, after which the first MDT KNX range was launched onto the market in 2009.

To this day, the core idea of offering the user more functionality runs throughout the entire product range at MDT.

Innovations

Universal actuators

Whether it is acting as a switch actuator, shutter actuator or a mix of the two, our new universal actuator offers comprehensive function enhancements. For example, with the new model it is possible to implement automatic shading/slat adjustment with sun position calculation or the practical ventilation function.

Shutter Push-button Smart 55

The new push-button is specially adjusted for the requirements of shutter control. You can see the function and the status of the shutters on its active colour display. As a bonus for your KNX system, we have equipped the push-button with a timer switch, which can be used to configure up to eight switching times.

The development of the KNX standard

A success story

Since its inception, KNX has been a strong association that works together every day to ensure that building automation is possible and can be connected for all areas.

  • In 1990, leading manufacturers of electrical installation technology came together to form the “European Installation Bus Association” (EIBA) in order to develop a shared automation standard. The result was the European Installation Bus (EIB), also known as Instabus.
  • In 1996, the three European organisations BatiBUS Club International (BCI), European Installation Bus Association (EIBA) and European Home System Association (EHSA) started the convergence process to define a shared standard for building automation applications.
  • In 1999, nine leading European electronics companies signed the statutes of the newly founded KNX Association.
  • The KNX specification was published in 2002, since 2003 it has been included in the European standard EN 50090 and since 2006 it has been set down in the international standard ISO/IEC 14543-3.
