Presence and movement detection
Automatic, reliable recognition for all rooms
Whether an open office space, storeroom, conference rooms, toilet, or cellar: the suitable detector should be selected for presence or movement detection and the automatic activation of lighting circuits, HVAC, and other functions. But what is the difference between motion and presence detectors?
The MDT Motion detector
A motion detector is ideal for installation in rooms which are used for a short period of time; hallway’s, utility rooms, or basements. Installed in a hallway or a corridor the recognition of the direction of movement is of benefit to the efficient use of the light. One of the finer adjustments which can be applied within the ETS. There are two variations of the movement detector available, the difference being, one of the products has an integrated temperature sensor and two sensor buttons for a variety of functions in single or a pair allocation. The integrated temperature sensor measures and transmits the measured value to the KNX bus to allowing for the respective area where the motion detector is installed to be temperature controlled. Available in the colours black and white the motion detector blends in with the chosen interior design.
Motion detector / Automatic switch
The MDT motion detector / automatic switch with light sensor detects the smallest movements with 2 pyro detectors and a high-resolution lens. Available with or without a temperature sensor, it is the all-rounder for many hallways and rooms. Suitable for 55 mm and 63 mm switch ranges, the detector is available in white (matt or glossy) and black.
The MDT presence detectors
The presence detectors detect the smallest of movements, such as a person working at a computer, and are therefore more suited for areas which are used for longer periods of the working environment of the presence detectors is not only workspaces, conference rooms and open planoffices, they canalso be installed in wet-rooms dependent on the IP rating of the chosen product. For ceiling installation, the individual detectors differ in terms of the number of sensors and the resulting different ranges for motion and presence detection. MDT also offers presence detectors with constant light control, which can be used to control dimmable lighting: the dimmed artificial light adapts maintain the required and set value in the presence detector as long as movement is detected and the total light level does not exceed the set value. The MDT presence detector range includes products with a diameter of 32 mm and a rating of IP44.
Presence Detector 360° L3 TS
The MDT presence detector L3 TS has in total three sensors, for an increased accuracy in detection. The sensors detect motion within a circumference of 11m in diameter and presence within a circumference of 5m in diameter. The integrated Temperature sensor measures the temperature in the room and transmits these values within the KNX system, for example to a room temperature controller.
Presence detector 360° L2 IP44
The MDT Presence detector L2 is, due to its IP44 protection class, suitable for installation in wet rooms, e.g., bathrooms. Presence detection is based on two sensors that can be individually evaluated and adjusted. The sensors detect motion within a circumference of 9m in diameter and presence within a circumference of 5m in diameter. Thus, one detector is usually sufficient to cover the entire entrance area of the bathroom.
Glass Presence Detector
The Glass Presence Detector is timelessly elegant and a stylish addition to the MDT glass push-buttons. The presence detector has an integrated temperature sensor in both available versions whereas one product has a constant light control. The detector's three pyro detectors detect movement within a radius of 11 metres and presence within a radius of 5 metres.
Presence Detector 360° with 3 sensors
The 360° Presence Detector uses 3 sensors to detect movement within a radius of 11 metres and presence within a radius of 5 metres. The detector is available in the colours white and black. The integrated white LED night light switches on when movement is detected and provides optimum orientation in the dark. The version with constant light control can dim up to 3 light bands optimising the energy consumption.
Presence Detector 360 ° with 4 sensors
The Presence Detector 360° uses 4 sensors to recognise movement within a large radius of 16 m in diameter and presence within a radius of 8 m in diameter. The detector is available in the colours white and black. The integrated white LED night light switches on when movement is detected and provides optimum orientation in the dark. The version with constant light control can dim up to 3 light bands optimising the energy consumption.
Presence Detector MR16
The Presence Detector MR16 has an integrated temperature sensor and white night light. With its 3 sensors and a high-resolution lens, the detector detects movement within a radius of 11 metres and presence within a radius of 5 metres. As a recessed presence detector, it is installed in a standard MR16 installation frame for LED spotlights. This allows the detector to fit perfectly into a row of recessed LEDs.
Mini Presence Detector 360°
Small but powerful, the Mini Presence Detector is perfect for use in smaller rooms. Equipped with a sensor and a high-resolution lens, the presence detector is discreet and non-obtrusive. The detector detects movement within a radius of 4 metres and presence within a radius of 5 metres.
Der Combi-Presence Detector - All in one!
MDT prefers to combine many functions in one device. The brand new 360° Combi-Presence Detector not only ensures reliable 360° presence detection, but also uses room climate sensors to monitor and measure values that are essential for demand orientated and energy-efficient room climate control. The integrated room climate sensor records the CO2 and VOC mixed gas concentration as well as the temperature and humidity in the relevant room. The Air-quality signal light function provides early warning of excessive CO2 or VOC concentrations in the room, for example by changing the colour of the integrated LED.
Combi-Presence Detector 360°
The new KNX Combi-Presence detector 360° from MDT ensures more than just reliable presence detection, it uses room climate sensors monitor and measure values that are essential for demand orientated and energy-efficient room climate control. Three passive infrared presence detectors recognise movements with a diameter of up to 11 metres, while the sensors detect the smallest movements as presence within a diameter of up to 5 metres. The Combi-Presence Detector – optionally available in white matt or black matt - and for installation in hollow ceilings using retaining springs, allowing it to blend in perfectly with any room design. The detector fits perfectly into any interior room design.
How does PIR detection work?
A PIR detector uses passive infrared sensors (PIR sensors) to recognise changes in the heat radiation of a room, as every person and every animal emits heat. This enables the PIR sensors to detect movement even in complete darkness. The sensor or presence detection is described as "passive", as PIR sensors detect the heat emitted by people without emitting energy themselves.

Information for the KNX system
Automation only works with sensors
Building automation becomes smart when the system reacts appropriately to the current situation. When the sun is blazing, the sunshade moves down; if someone enters the hallway, the light gets brighter; if the building is cooling down, the heating is activated.
In order for this to work, the system needs to be provided with the relevant values by sensors. Then appropriate automatic reactions can be configured in the KNX system.

MDT Presence Detectors and MDT Motion Detectors
You can determine whether people are present or not with presence detectors and motion detectors. You can link actions, such as lighting in the storeroom or the comfort temperature in the living room, to presence. In this case, presence detectors are used in rooms where people spend extended periods.
The detectors have more refined detection and can therefore recognise even smaller movements, for example a person at a desk. For areas that are only used briefly (such as hallways or side rooms), motion detectors are used. They have a detection angle that prevents them from detecting small pets.

Values for your KNX system
Measuring
MDT Sensors
With KNX sensors, values are provided to your KNX installation, with which the system regulates the smart home technology. To measure the air quality in a room, a VOC sensor is installed. The measured values can either be, visually displayed as an indivator in a RGB light in the colours, red-yellow-green, in a visualisation or a direct activation of the ventilation based on a set threshold value. The humidity sensor is as equally important for ventilation. Installed in a bathroom where a higher level of humidity may occur due to the use of hot water when showering or bathing, as soon as a threshold value is exceeded the ventilation can be activated to extract humid and create a circulation of fresh air, switching off automatically as soon as the level is below the threshold value. A temperature sensor in every room is vital for the optimised regulation of the heating system. Room temperature controllers allow for an automatic regulation of the room temperature and allow for a comfortable/ pleasant manual adjustment when required.
You can comfortably control the temperature directly via a Room temperature controller/-sensor. The MDT Room Temperature Controllers have an integrated PI-controller. In corridors without motion detectors, it is advisable to use a brightness sensor that will provide light level values that in conjunction with a dimmer or a LED controller will brighten an orientation light if the level is not sufficient. An installed weather station, provides information, wind speed, the outdoor temperature, brightness values for the directions; east, south and west. A separate rain sensor provides precipitation information. These values are particularly relevant for automatically controlling the sun shading, which can be automatically adjusted to the current weather situation.
